Keeping our wharf tidy and our Bay clean this summer!
Following the success of our previous summer initiatives, Resilient Russell is back on the Kororāreka Wharf this holiday season. We know that the summer influx can put a strain on our local infrastructure, particularly with waste management for boaties and visitors.

To prevent the dumping of black trash sacks and ensure our recyclables are diverted from the landfill, we are once again operating our Pop-Up Recycling & Refuse facility at the end of the Russell Wharf.
When and Where
The pop-up will run for just over two weeks to cover the busiest part of the summer season:
- Dates: Friday, 26 December 2025 – Sunday, 11 January 2026
- Hours: Daily from 8:00 am – 11:00 am and 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
How it Works
Our friendly Refuse Ambassadors will be on-site during these hours to assist you with sorting your recycling and managing your general waste.
- Recycling: Bring your clean recycling to the ambassadors at the end of the wharf.
- General Refuse: This remains a “user pays” service. Please head to the Russell Information Centre (located on the wharf) to pay for your refuse bags. They will provide you with a ticket; simply present this to our Ambassador as proof of payment when you drop off your rubbish.

A True Community Effort
This initiative is a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we work together. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the partners who make this possible:
- Kororāreka / Russell Community Wharf Kaitiaki Trust: For their ongoing funding and support.
- Northland Waste: For providing the bins free of charge.
- Hone’s Garden: For their muscle in transporting recycling from the wharf to the local station.
- Citycare Services (FNDC Contractor): For collecting the general waste bags from the wharf.
- Far North Holdings Ltd for their ongoing funding and support.
- Eco Solutions for the use of their bin lids and general support.
- Dianne Smith and Ray White Russell for printing and laminating posters.
- Jane Hindle, community board rep for preparing the posters and on-going support.
- Tracey and Mike Cadogan, for being involved three years in a row – now that’s dedication!

By using this facility, you aren’t just getting rid of rubbish—you’re helping Resilient Russell protect our waterfront and keep the Bay of Islands beautiful for everyone.
See you on the wharf!
