What is “The Shed”?
“The Shed” in Korāreka Russell is a member of Menz Shed New Zealand and operates under the umbrella of Resilient Russell Charitable Trust.
Menz Sheds bring people together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks – either individually (personal projects) or as a group (for the local community). They are a great place to learn new skills, share skills, make new friends, and create things for the local community in the process.

About the Russell MenzShed
Third time lucky so the saying goes. Resilient Russell Charitable Trust had two previous attempts at starting a MenzShed, first in a big old shed on what was once an oyster farm, then at the local transfer station. Unfortunately, both of these endeavours had to go into the too hard basket.
Then, along came local businessman Rod Haines of Haines Haulage who, free of charge, carted an old Air NZ porter classroom from his site in Whangarei to a secure area behind the Russell Gas Station and donated the building to Resilient Russell for use as our Russell MenzShed.
We became a member of MenzShed NZ and with the help of Menz Shed Far North Coordinator Mike Collins, a group of Russell guys set about making the building fit for purpose.
Now our Russell Sheddies are fully engaged in projects for the community including building entrance porches for retirement cottages on the Duffus Estate, planter boxes to enhance the waterfront Place Making Project, bench seats for the grounds of NZ’s oldest church, holding car boot sales of surplus donated material and preventing as much waste as possible going to landfill.
If you’d like to get involved, get in touch! We often share transport if you need a ride.
