Pop Up Recycling & Refuse facility on Kororāreka Wharf

Following on from last year’s success, we have kicked off the Wharf rubbish and recycling pop-up again this year, starting from Boxing Day Thursday 26 December 2024.

The opening hours are 8 am – 11 am and 2 pm – 5 pm, and the pop-up recycling centre will remain open until 19 January 2025.

Duffus team members are helping people with their waste and recycling in the mornings

Refuse ambassadors will be on hand during those hours to assist with the recycling. Payment for refuse bags can be made at the Russell Information Centre on the wharf. They will give you a ticket once paid, just bring this to the Ambassador as proof of payment.

Great work by the Cadogans, Duffus team members and all the many individuals and organisations helping us out – among them the Bay of Islands Whangaroa Community Board, Northland Waste, Citycare Services, and Hone’s Pizza Garden, with sponsorship from the Far North District Council’s commercial arm, Far North Holdings Ltd and the Kororāreka Russell Wharf Community Kaitiaki Trust.

Update

Our pop-up recycling station has been featured in Boating New Zealand magazine: Russell leads the way in wharf recycling: A community effort to keep the Bay clean
